Literary Crushes

So I never thought I'd say something like this, but I got a hot book-related link from the ladies over at Go Fug Yourself. Go figure. Apparently their site is good for more than just snark and fashion.

They linked to "15 Literary Characters We'd Totally Sleep With." I can't get on board with Heathcliff - that is just too, too much crazy. And he crosses the line to mean...and I don't do mean. Same with the Phantom - I would never sleep with someone who scares the hell out of me. Both these guys make me think of a single song: "No More Drama" by Mary J. Blige.

BUT...Gilbert Blythe? Yes, pleeease. Aragorn? Anytime. Mr. Darcy? Cliched, but of course. Also LOVE the selection of Dr. Carlisle Cullen over the brooding Edward and tempermental Jacob. I'll take a real man, thank you.

The oddest choice? Logan from The Babysitters' Club? Really??? That has an "ew" factor for me.

So who did they leave off? Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series, of course. Howard Roark from The Fountainhead. Wesley from The Princess Bride (both the movie and book version).

Which literary characters do it for you?

* Note: I have changed this post a little since its original publication date back in 2009 - the way I had it titled was giving me nothing but p**n site hits (worried that if I use the full word, they'll keep visiting this post).  FYI... 6.2.11

Having just re-read Persuasion (yes, I know, I just re-read it about 2 months ago, but I was sick this weekend and needed comfort books), Captain Frederick Wentworth is climbing the charts of Austen men.

Agree with you about Heathcliff and the Phantom. Yuk. I'd take Rochester over Heathcliff any day. And Ned never did anything for me.

Some of the commenters touched on this - most of these are kids books. Babysitters Club? really? Why not some more recent stuff?

Damn, Monica beat me to it! Gen.

When I was a tween? Will from The Dark is Rising. He was my first book boyfriend. Not now, because ew, he's not even in puberty.

Hmmm.... I think I'm missing someone major, someone recent...

Monica, will you share Lord Peter? :o)

And Laura -- I feel the need for speed!

Kristin! As if I didn't adore you enough already! "I was keeping up foreign relations...I was, you know, giving him the bird."

Ooooh, Liz, I love the idea of "first book boyfriend". I think mine might have been Dickon from The Secret Garden. Followed shortly by Todd Wilkins from Sweet Valley High.

Anali, you reminded me: I still need to read Persuasion!

LOL! That just cracked me up. Oh I totally would want Edmond Dantes from The Count of Monte Cristo. I'd make him forget about revenge and Mercedes and off we'd go, happily ever after. :)

Jesse Tuck (don't laugh, I adored that book).

More recently...hmmm... I'm having problems with this!

Oh, to hell with it. Mr. Darcy. The Bridget Jones's version.

Ooo oooo, I got one! Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities. So much more interesting than that boring Charles Mr. Perfect Darnay.

Laura, I'm inspired to put Top Gun on hold at the library, because I haven't seen it in WAY too long!

Akin to Gilbery Blythe Mr. Ladd in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and Joe from the Betsy-Tacy books.

Gilbert definitely. Lord Peter yep. More recent ones...am drawing a serious blank. And my goodreads bit isn't jogging any thoughts either. And in the teen mystery bit, Frank from the Hardy Boys.

You know, sadly, I created a list of this back in the '90s. And there are some I'd just want to sleep with just to see what all the fuss is about.

Is Logan the baddish boy in babysitters club? Which I remember from my vague watching of the movie.

And Holden would drive me insane now. 16 or not 16.

First boyfriends would be Dickon from Secret Garden and Alexander Armsworth from the Blossom books and Laurie (of course) from LW. Re-read one of the Blossom books and realized the creepiness of it now.

Anali, I still also need to read Persuasion. Might be the only major Austen haven't read. Though I've only read Mansfield Park once and not very well.

And also St. George from Gaudy Night. Mini St. Peter.

And slightly Cedric from Final Curtain.

Okay, I've read way too many mysteries. And Brat Farrar which am totally basing from the PBS Mystery one from 1987 or so.

Mr. Thornton from North and South, Captain Wentworth from Persuasion totally, Faramir from LOTR... did I mention Mr. Thornton? I'm currently reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time but I've seen the movies and I love Gilbert as well. I'm sure I'll love him just as much in the book!
